Access Statement

Introduction

The Appley is located in central Shanklin and offers Ten Guest rooms. The Appley is over One hundred years old and whilst we aim to meet the needs of all our guests there are some period features which might make access difficult for people with limited mobility. We have rooms at different levels, with our dining room being down one flight of stairs, and therefore steps into some of the rooms. These make The Appley not suitable for wheelchair users.

Pre-Arrival

1       We are located in Queens Road and is easily accessible both by car, bus or foot.

2       The nearest shops are approximately 5 minutes away.

3       The Shanklin Bus station is only a short walk away by Somerfields supermarket. Buses run frequently to all parts of the island.

4       The nearest railway station is situated at the top of Regent Street and is approximately 1/2 mile away. Taxis are usually available at the station but we can book one for you in advance if required.

5       There are several local taxi companies; we can make bookings in advance for you.

6       We regret that we are unable to accommodate pets.

7       We regret we do not have facilities to prepare documents in Braille.

Arrival and Car Parking

1       Please advise us of your anticipated arrival time so that we can be sure we are here to welcome you.

2       To ensure your accommodation is ready we ask that guests do not normally arrive before 2.00pm. Earlier arrival may, however, be possible by prior arrangement.

3       Off Road Parking is available at the front and side of The Appley. Please park within the marked bays.

4       We offer assistance with luggage.

Main Entrance

1       There are three steps of 9 inches up to the front door with a hand rail on one side.

2       The front door is normally open but please ring the bell on your arrival.

Guest Accommodation – Public Areas

1       There are 4 Guest Bedrooms situated on the ground floor, along with the Bar Lounge and Reception.

2       There is one step up into Room 6.

3       There are two flights of stairs up to the first floor where the remaining guest rooms are situated, The stairs are carpeted, with hand rails either side

4       There is a Guests toilet available on the half landing to the first floor…

5       There is a Bathroom with bath / shower that can be made available to guests during the day / evening with one step down to reach it.

6       The Appley is centrally heated throughout.

7       The Reception area has a wide variety of literature of places to see on the island. There is a payphone available for guests.

Bar Lounge and Dining Room

1       Guests are welcome to use the Bar /Lounge at any time.

2       The Bar/Lounge has straight back chairs and tables with the licensed bar, which is open in the evening from 9:00pm. This room has a television and a selection of games.

3       The Bar Lounge is carpeted and double doors that open onto the veranda.

4       A selection of local information, maps, magazines and board games is available in the lounge.

5       Breakfast and evening meals are served in the dining room.

6       The dining room has a carpeted floor and is situated down one flight of stairs with hand rails either side. 

7       We are licensed for the sale of alcohol to residents only.

Bedrooms

1       All bedrooms are carpeted throughout.

2       There are en suite facilities in all rooms consisting of a shower, WC and wash basin.

3       Tea and coffee facilities are provided.

4       We also provide a hair dryer in all rooms

5       We provide fresh towels and face cloths.

6       There is an iron and ironing board available on request.

7       Our Beds are normally made with Duvets but Sheets and Blankets are available. Please request before arrival.

8       There are Clock Radio alarms and Television in all Bedrooms

9       There is a wardrobe, chest of drawers in each room

10   There is a folder in each bedroom which contains further information about The Appley and details of emergency contacts including doctors and hospitals, Places to eat, Places to Worship etc.

Bedroom 1

1       Bedroom 1 is to the left at the top of the stairs on the First Floor.

2       This room can provide either a Twin or a double bedded Room

3       This room has rear facing window.

Bedroom 2

1       Bedroom 2 is second left at the top of the stairs on the first floor

2       This room is Front facing with one Bay Window and One smaller window.

3       This room has one double bed  accessible from both sides

Bedroom 3

1       Bedroom 3 is third on the left at the top of the stairs on the first floor

2       This room is Front facing with one Bay Window and One smaller window.

3       This room is the Family Room

4       This room has One double bed and One set of Bunk Beds.

Bedroom 4

1       Bedroom 4 is on the right at the top of the stairs on the First Floor

2       This room is Side facing with One window.

3       This room has one double bed  accessible from both sides

Bedroom 5

1       Bedroom 5 is right at the top of the stairs on the First Floor.

2       This room is Rear facing with One window.

3       This room has one double bed  accessible from both sides

Bedroom 6

1       Bedroom 6 is on the Ground Floor at the bottom of the stairs to the First floor.

2       This room is Rear facing with One window.

3       This room has one double bed  accessible from both sides

4       There a 6 inch step into the room.

Bedroom 7

1       Bedroom 7 is on the Ground Floor.

2       This room is Side facing with One window.

3       This room has one Single bed accessible from one side only.

Bedroom 8

1       Bedroom 8 is on the Ground  Floor at next to the Front Door

2       This room is Front facing with One Bay Window.

3       This room has one double bed  accessible from both sides

Bedroom 9

1       Bedroom 9 is on the Ground Floor behind the Bar Lounge.

2       This room is Rear facing with One window.

3       This room has Two Single Beds  accessible from both sides

Bedroom 10

1       Bedroom 10 is on the Lower Floor at the bottom of the stairs to the Ground floor and next to the Kitchen.

2       This room is Side facing with One window.

3       This room has one double bed  accessible from both sides

Garden

1       We have a large Front garden with lawn and Flower beds

2       Guests are very welcome to enjoy our garden at all times.

3       There are 3 steps of 9 inches into the garden.

4       There is no seating available in the garden.

5       There is a Veranda outside the garden door which can be accessed from the Front door or the Bar when it is open.

6       There is Bench seating available on the veranda.

Additional Information

1       There is a fire extinguisher in the entrance hall and another at the top of the guest stairs.

2       In the event of a fire the Fire Alarm will sound in all rooms. Please advise us if you have a hearing impairment and might not hear this.

3       The building can be evacuated via the front in the entrance hall. In an emergency there is also an exit via our kitchen which is to the right at the bottom of the stairs.

4       As per regulations Smoking is strictly prohibited in ALL areas of the premises.

5       We are happy to cater for special diets or any particular likes or dislikes. Please advise us of these before your arrival.

6       We are happy to refrigerate any medication. We can also keep any perishables (such as clotted cream!) in our fridge for a limited period.

7       Mobile phone reception at the cottage is generally ok but in some of the surrounding area there is no signal.

Future Plans for The Appley

1       In February 2008 we are having new carpet fitted throughout the hallways and stairs.

2        We are planning to refurbish Two bedrooms in 2008

3       The fire alarm system will be upgraded in 2008.
